People who respect children and young people and enjoy working with them make valuable and positive contributions to organisations and the community.

Organisations benefit when they identify the right people who want to create safe and friendly environments for kids. Good recruitment, selection and reference checking practices also help to prevent unsuitable people from working with kids.

Recruitment means attracting applicants; staff, volunteers, or students on placement. Including a statement about your organisation’s commitment to being child-safe and child-friendly gives applicants a clear idea of your organisation’s values and they can choose to accept those values or opt out at the beginning.

Selection is the process of deciding the most competent and suitable person for the job. A good practice is to discover their response to your organisation’s commitment to child-safe and child-friendly practice.

You can find out more about an applicant by conducting thorough reference checks with people who have worked with them before, or who know them well.

And remember, all people who work with children in NSW have to complete a Prohibited Employment Declaration.

You can use the resources below to help your organisation develop a child-safe and child-friendly recruitment and selection process for staff and volunteers.
