This is a compendium of papers that seek to define and address those challenges within the broader context of changing attitudes toward the right of children and young people to play an active role in the decisions and actions that shape their lives.

Sharing a New Story: Young People in Decision-Making (2003), Ani Wierenga, The Foundation for Young Australians, Melbourne 

This resource considers why involving young people in decision making is important and provides useful information on what helps young people to get involved and what gets in the way. It also includes a number of frameworks and toolkits for young people’s participation.

Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies 

The Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies publishes a quarterly journal, Youth Studies Australia, which is aimed at people who work with young people. This website also contains several articles on young people’s participation and other issues.

The Innovation Centre for Community and Youth Development

This website contains a range of resources on topics such as training and consulting, young people in decision making, engagement and activism, and community building.

What Works in Youth Participation: Case Studies from Around the World (2002), International Youth Foundation

This resource contains nine case essays from countries such as India, The Philippines, USA, and Germany. The authors, from a diverse range of ages and nationalities, discuss what works and what doesn’t when dealing with young people and participation.

Children, Youth and Environments Journal

A free online journal with a focus on children and young people’s participation in their environments. This website features peer-reviewed research articles, field reports, book reviews, a database of individuals and organizations worldwide and a searchable bibliography.
