  • 1 week left to comment on legislative review of Commission for Children & Young People Act
    21 May 2010

The Minister for Youth, Peter Primrose, today reminded stakeholders that written submissions to the legislative review of the Commission for Children and Young People Act must be completed by Monday May 31.

The legislative review of the Act was recently bought forward to enable a comprehensive reassessment of the Working With Children Check and is being led by Michael Eyers AM, an experienced lawyer, senior public sector executive and management consultant.

Mr Primrose said the response to the call for submissions had been pleasing, but more were expected before the closing date.

“This review will build on the work that has already taken place to improve the screening of people working with children in NSW,” Mr Primrose said.

“It follows on from an operational review of the Commission and the Auditor-General’s findings into the effectiveness of the Working With Children Check.

“It’s an important step in making sure we have the best possible system of protection for our children and I welcome feedback from the community on that important aim.

“The legislative review also provides a timely opportunity to examine the Commission’s broader policy, advocacy, research and education functions, particularly in light of the Government’s response to the Wood Special Commission of Inquiry into Child Protection Services in NSW.”

Further information about the review and how to make submissions are available on the Communities NSW website www.communities.nsw.gov.au/consultation
